this picture is 4 lb, 10 1/2 year old papillon annie sleeping (until i got the camera) on a toy called a snuggle puppie i purchased from revival. it has a pouch underneath into which you can place the "beating heart" which comes with the puppie and/or a hand warmer. i got it to use with hand warmers for days of heat malfunctions or when we have to travel the half hour to the vet at 6:30 am. annie adores this puppie and sleeps with her head and front paws on it every night. i'm glad she took right to it as it makes it handy that she accepted it so will use it when i do have to add the heat part to it. much better than putting things into the microwave. that just turns me off somehow knowing that's where i prepare food. enjoy.

hi folks, here are 4 new pics. annie is trying out her new pink bed from etsy. she loves it. and bump had his picture taken with his groomer this morning. she is a large woman and bump is a diminuitive lil guy and i just love how gentle she always is with him - like she is just so comforting to him. remember, his eyesight and hearing aren't so good now. she coos at him while she's grooming him. vicky used to groom my retired miniature schnauzers. she's great and bump loves her - obviously she relaxes him as you can see by the BIIIGGG yawn. enjoy.

bump, annie, and rider and the snowstorm mar 1,2009. annie wasn't impressed and would have preferred to "swim" in the drainage ditch i think. notice the fantastic job of plowing the road. we don't have snow removal equipment here. it's called the sun. thankfully it's been out all day melting the stuff. i lost cable tv and internet for about 6 hours but that's about it for us here so far. will wait and see what happens when the ice on the trees all freezes back over tonight. hope you enjoy the pics. lil bump in the blue coat used to love snow but at age 15 now, he just mostly stood there and shook. he was only out about 4 minutes.

these pictures are of annie in late sept, 2008 when she first came to me with a bad diet and whipworms and free feeding hard kibble that she really couldn't chew because of her bad teeth. whipworms are all gone, diet was changed, and she had her dental in jan, 2009. i would say this little girl has blossomed! and her raging? we've got that under control, not fixed, that will take several years, but it's now predictable and only happens about once every 2 weeks. i'm so proud of her progress. in some 30 years of rescue, this is the ONLY dog out of the hundreds that have passed thru whom i am certain has been hit. but that's her old life and we're undoing it gradually and she's winging her way right into her new life not missing a flower.

while my hand was in a cast for 2 months after surgery and then for another 3 weeks building up strength, the dogs had pretty well, um, gone to the dogs. i did brush them when i could and my vet dremeled their nails but it was time for a good grooming this past week for bump. he was matted and at almost 15 years old, i didn't think he wanted to tolerate the endless hours on the grooming table. so, i hauled out what i had left of grooming equipment from the show days with the miniature schnauzers and bathed bump, driedd him, then tackled shortening and dematting his coat. i meanwhile overdid it with my hand and had to back off but was almost thru with the rough clip, dematting, and trimming coat, some 3-6 inches in length in places. here are the before and after. yes, he is truly a purebred papillon with his championship. the lesson: if you see a dog in a shelter, don't necessarily discount it as not being a papillon. i think he's cute as a button, but will let his fur grow back out for however many days/years bump and i still have together. i do have to admit that i took him to my old pet groomer today (haven't been to her in 10 years) and she performed a miracle tidying him up. she had to quit after an hour 20 minutes because he had simply had enough. it's turned cold here so he's currently wearing annie's pink coat but we didn't tell him it's pink so he thinks he's the big stud on the block. sorry, no pic of that. but enjoy him please. he's just too cute. oh, and for the knitters, i have knitted one dishcloth. it looks like a novice made it but at least i know as soon as i get this thumb trained to knit, i can do it so will reknit this same cloth until it's got the right tension. i'm going to let everyone guess for themselves the before and after pics of bump.

annie loves her new bed her aunt rita got her. she's slept for the last 2 hours in it. finally, a bed to call her own :). i can't believe i've actually got a pink dog bed in my house. i must be getting senile - lol.

don't fall for the innocent little thing. this is totally spoiled. but i couldn't resist. annie sleeping in her only "toy" i've purchased, she loves to burrow. if your dog does too, this bed is a must. it's the "mini nesting mat" available at lots of places. i got annie's at revival. the other pic is bump on the table which is his favorite spot as that's right beside where i sit. i had just gotten up and left the room. came back to find miss annie horning in on the forbidden table scheme. for those wondering, that IS an expensive hitchcock table bump is lying on. oh well, after all these years of dogs, it's held up pretty darn well. enjoy the bratalons :).

hi folks, here are first pics of annie. isn't she adorable? she's a 7 1/2 year old papillon. she does have some fear and confusion biting issues but i've worked with this kind of dog before with great results. i'm another foster failure. when she bonded with my parrot like pirets was bonded with him before pirets died, she melted my heart. then when she got my 14 1/2 year old soulmate bump playing and happily lay on the sofa with rider and me (they are on previous issues of this blog somewhere), i knew she needed to become part of us. so my world is all put together again but with a new companion helping to fill the earthly void left by pirets. tonight is such a good night and we're even more happy because rider's buddy winston is here for a 4 day boarding adventure. i hope you like the pics of annie. they're not perfect but they're a beginning and they show her coloring. star

ack! the pics went in backwards. dummy me. please start at the bottom of the series for the folding order and the directions. i'm so sorry but i was trying to do this in a hurry. thanks.

i hope you can follow the steps for folding. notice the small fold on the left top turning the dark trim toward the neckline. on that last fold, the rightmost top is simply folded down into the skirt thus you don't see the end. as i said, i didn't take the time to knit the strip double and fold the bottom toward the back lengthwise as i wanted to get this to you so see but if you knitted those extra 12 rows, then your back will have a nice skirt too into which all the parts are tucked and the last thing is to stitch and secure everything with your tapestry needle. the candy cane is holding my head as i need to reknit it to the smaller head size which are the directions i put on ravelry. good luck, enjoy and holler if you need help.

knitting therapy

since i lost pirets we have all been pretty down so i decided to knit some face cloths in colors i like while spending time with bump and rider. i finished the last one tonight and it was the butterfly. it's hard to see even in the next picture but it's there. you will all recognize feather and fan. i have to thank Tina for that and you may notice i knitted it both with and without borders to see which i liked best. the other cloths are "Roses For Mary" and "Lace & Diamonds" both purchased downloads by Sue Schaefer at Harvest Moon Designs. now i have some thank you notes to send. all four of pirets vets along with all 6 techs sent personal notes and i had an additional 8 mailed notes not to mention the about 125 email notes from papillon owners, friends, and knitting friends. i was overwhelmed over so many. never had i imagined such a response for one very little but very special little dog. i gave my life up for his 11 1/2 years to make sure his medical needs were met. as i always said, i bred him, i was responsible for his life and i would never abandon him. i think it was that dedication that made him so special to the animal community. but now we move on. two nights ago, rider finally left his new spot on the foot of the bed and climbed into my lap, curled up, and snoozed while i watched tv. i guess he's finally sorted it out in his head and felt comfortable taking up residence in my lap again. it felt so very good to have him there too. maybe now, i can get back to starting the blanket and doing the dishcloths and sweater i've told myself i WILL get done this year. i hope you enjoy the picture of the cloths. star

this is actually the white cloth that is on the front. i have it sitting on top of the rose colored cloth in this picture. it is a free butterfly from another list knitted with the border from the download purchase of "From the Heart" by Sue Schaefer at Harvest Moon Designs. It was the last one i knitted and bump and rider have about squared things away between themselves as to pack leader. they're both learning to give me "high fives" for being such super dogs. bump has it down quite nicely, rider still doesn't have a clue as to how to do it but he'll get it. now it's on to our new life without our little pirets but we go forward knowing that he no longer hurts.

blue baby blanket

this blue baby blanket is sidar pattern # 1575, knitted with plymouth dream baby d.k. on #7's. i made it 28x32 using 153 stitches. this blanket will go to my beloved papillon pirets' technician. i lost pirets friday jan 18, 2008 after an 11 1/2 year lifetime of various problems. he was my true knitting partner and was often seen about town or at home in my lap with yarn drapped all over him as i knitted away the stitches waiting for his vet appts or consoling him. i love this pattern, especially the self bordering. it's tension isn't perfect considering i had to stop and start so many times but it doesn't matter. it was mostly knitted with my lil guy on my lap and that alone made me happy. next project is sidar # 1598, a white baby shawl.

this bib is modified from a downloadable bib from knitwits heaven. i omitter the crochet and added a moss stitch to the sides. made from pnc, it's soft and absorbant. i suggest you knit the ties at least 15 inches to allow for shrinkage. paired with a washcloth made from the same pattern but stopped about the top of the heart and a moss stitch border added, it will make an easy knit for beginners or advanced knitters and a nice baby gift.

kitty scarf i made for my sister for christmas. o.k. so it had to be gray as she wears a lot of black and likes dull colors. she had to put her 19 1/2 yr old cat down in october and has a new kitten, her new passion. free pattern is at http://iliveonafarm.com/gentlewaters.html . i used dolly maxi lenea merino, all wool from italy. it's about $8.75/ball and i used 2 1/2 balls. i chose to make a scarf that could be worn with a suit jacket so i had to knit both ends from the bottom separately, reduce stitches to half at the part that would go under the collar then weave together with a kitchener stitch. i just finished it today (12/23/2007). sure hope sister likes it.

this shows the finished tawashi which was an option for the kal we just did. it was shown at the site in white with blue trim. o.k. so mine's purple and orange. it's recipient has a kid who's a senior at clemson so i just had to swallow my pride and knit cow college colors. i don't c*#(@) but one 15 min lesson from a friend and the i taught myself how to crochet book taught me enough that doing the edge was a breeze. entire tawashi maybe took an hour and half. i think it's just too cute. i MUST start another one asap. thanks to rhonda for the pattern and to cathy h for the blue cloth (it's a dog paw :).

the fish tawashi now has an eye. it's a crocheted ring - yes, rhonda, i actually used the hook myself - with a black center made by stitching back and forth over the "hole" in the ring. now i have a whole box of tawashi yarn in every color imaginable so look for more tawashi's. yippee!

fish tawashi made with purple and gold antibacterial yarn. he's temporarily a blind cave fish with no eye while the eye yarn makes it's way here from okinawa then he'll be able to see. i also had to use the gold triple stranded as it was fine weight and the purple was bulky. but you can't tell the difference. i think he's cute as a button.

candy bags

these cute little bags are Mandy's Candy Bag http://www.nhknittingmama.blogspot.com. i increased the stitches from 39 to 52 for the large one to make it a casual beach evening bag and made the other according to the original directions of 39 stitches. both are knitted from the same skeins of fantasy naturale and i have enough left over to knit another small bag. the large bag is 7 inches tall, small one is about 5 inches tall. i think they're adorable and they'll be gifts. note that i repeated the variegated yarn at the bottom of the smaller bag.the handles on the larger bag are such that you can pull the icord up at the back and hang the bag over your wrist with the front and back "straps".

at last, this is the finished little picot bag. i can't say much as i don't want the recipient to know who it is for. this bag is the terra knitted gift bag from http://iliveonafarm.com/terra.html . i knitted mine with linea merino dolly maxi. it took a little less than one skein on #6 dpn's. i found using all 5 needles was easier. this adorable little bag is easy but is very involved. it has a provisional cast on, a picot edge, a grafter 3 needle hem about 3/4 inch from the top, 2 cables, icord with a different color at the beginning and end, 5 dpn's and 12 buttons sewn on. the pattern mistakenly says 11 buttons. i totally enjoyed knitting this bag. it makes me smile but don't try to do it as a quick knit. the blue yarn is knitpicks woa in chambray. 8/2007

simple pin cushion

hi folks,
i'd been sick the last 3 days and felt the urge to do a quick project. besides, almost all my stitch markers have been given to me by people and i wanted to display them so i could look at them but didn't like the boards. i wanted ready availability. this is the free simple pin cushion from http://www.frugalhaus.com/homepage/freepats.htm which is the old frugalhaus site. it took me about 2 hours to make this morning. i put stitch holders from cheryl, rhonda, cathy, and my lace ones i purchased on it for the picture. it's about 3 1/2 inches across. so now that i know i love it, i'm going to make one about 5 inches across and 13 stitches high so my longer stitch holders will dangle down the sides nicely. i also put a few sewing pins in as there's no reason it can't double as the pin cushion it was originally intended to be. i knitted mine from woa double stranded and sewed thru it to hold it together but it would make a very good project for a child if you follow the actual directions. i love my little marker holder :).

this is a picot hem done at the top of a little bag knitted top down. i have knitted the first 6 rows, done the eyelet row, knitted the next 6 rows and then folded the top in at the eyelet row and knitted a stitch from the cast on and one from the bag to form the hem as you can see on the inside. the blue/green yarn is marking the beginning of the round. merino wool, # 6 dpn's.

here's where i am on the blue blanket i started last sunday. it's about 12 inches long. i have to get it to 24 inches by monday morning so i can do the kal. whew! wonder if i'll make it. sirdar purchaseable pattern. plymouth dream baby. # 7's. i increased the pattern up to dk weight yarn and additional 20 stitches to make it 30 inches wide. it will be 34 inches long eventually.

i started in january making this pink lace blanket for my dog pirets' specialist veterinarian. it went well until i had to start the yellow one. both are for july babies so that was a lot to bite off. knitting lace is not the easiest thing in the world when you have obsessant dogs and a parrot around as the interruptions require that you count and count and recount. wow, thanks to all of you who have sent me stitch markers. they have ALL been used at some point. at the beginning of february, pirets got severely ill spending almost a week in the hospital and 2 months of special needs. his vet never failed him - thru morning sickness and hormonal changes, she remained true to him. but in june, this blanket turned into a love/hate relationship. i was so close to it being finished and i loved it's pattern but i had knitted mostly on only it and the yellow blanket and i was about blanketed out. ahhhh, but with knitters, we persist in creating our magic with 2 sticks and some string and the blanket is now a lovely gift i can't wait to give to pirets' veterinarian. mostly it's been a ball and i can think of no other person so deserving of this kind of work of love. i have about 180 hours into this blanket as i knitted the entire 2 months that pirets was sick focusing on him and the blanket. i truly hope dr. laura loves it. oh, and you can't see much of it, but the quilt the blanket is on is "bumpie's quilt" made expecially for bump by a good friend. it was blue for my favorite color, had butterflies in one of the fabrics, is quilted around the edge with hearts for his valentine's birthday, in the center with star's for my name, and has a large piecwork butterfly on on the back made with the fabric with the butterflies in it. she also made a pillow. i'll try to get everyone a picture of it but it's obvious this lady knew me. it's also made with cotton batten so it will pucker when washed. but back to the blanket, the pattern is purchaseable "diamonds for rhiannon", sirdar snuggly dk yarn, # 6's. 27 1/2 x 29 1/2 and i did purchase a liner for the blanket.

these two pictures are me, pirets in my right arm, bump in my left arm, and rider on the floor. i set the timer on the camera to 10 seconds while holding bump and pirets, ran to the chair, then called rider and "hoped" for the best. it took about 12 shots to get us all and i had to narrow it to 2 pictures cause time was running out as this was a gift to the family. in the one where i'm smiling you can't see pirets face. the family got a framed project with butterfly outlines and 3 pics of me and dogs made with microsoft pictureit.

this is pirets when he was so sick this feb-mar (2007). he blew out 3 catheters and we were running out of legs. he's wearing his new soft elizabethan collar which the staff calls a "hat" and after he wore it once, naturally it became a habit and insisted on wearing it long after he needed it. they also rolled his food into little balls and topped them with nutrical and called them cupcakes. yeah, it was a specialist hospital.

this beautiful yellow blanket is adapted from a sirdar pattern. i have sewn pink rosettes onto it because my niece actually wanted the previously spoken for pink lace blanket. this blanket is knitted bottom up, then turned sideways when put together. i increased the border by stitches so it didn't looked skimped on. i totally enjoyed knitting this blanket. i have purposely made it heirloom quality with hand knit tag and all. i would LOVE to keep it for myself.
